Impact of ThriveX | Participant Interview

In Term 2 2024, we launched a pilot programme to establish how a bespoke entrepreneurial experience would support students’ engagement and participation at school.

With the support of Tauranga Attendance Services and in collaboration with the Creative Hub at the Incubator, we launched the programme called ThriveX.
ThriveX ran over 10 with 21 tauira (students), identified by their schools as low to moderate risk of disengagement and with low but not critical attendance. In total we spent 35 hours with the ropu.

We set out with the goal to "Unlock the Entrepreneurial Mindset & Creativity" of our young participants

Today, we speak with Tyson, one of the participants, to discuss how this experience has influenced their personal and academic journey.
Interview

Q: Can you describe your situation before joining the programme?
A: I dont like going to school much. It was boring for me. I m interested in tattoos, drawing ta moko and motorcycles and barbering and I cant do any of this at school
Q: What motivated you to participate in the programme?
A: I am not sure, I was picked by Sir, thought I’d give it a go
Q: How has the programme influenced your academic and personal development?
A: It helped me get through a whole week of school. I’d be looking forward to it all week. I started going to school more because the weeks would be shorter with thrive x being in the middle. And I made new friends.
Q: Can you share specific skills or knowledge you've gained?
A: I liked the clay and the photography because I liked the hands-on. I’ve always been better with hands-on activities like carving. I learnt new stuff, and it was good to see that what we all made got sold at the Exhibition, I had not sold something I’ve made before.
Q: What are your future aspirations, and how has the programme shaped them?
A: Well right now I want to know when there is ThriveX 2 as I made new friends who I didnt have before at school, so now knowing that I can make things that sell, I want to do this again. I attended all the the programme session, which is great and it has made me improve my overall school attendance, so I’ ll see to continuing this with my new bros.
